What Is Tanking?

Tanking is a method of making cellar and basement walls waterproof using the application of cement. A form of waterproofing is needed when converting a basement area into usable rooms to ensure the spaces don’t suffer from water ingress. There are different ways of tanking an underground room and the best method to use will depend on several things. At Anke Damp Proofing, we survey your property to BS8102; 2009 to guide you to the best tanking method. We won’t oversell products to you – our surveyors are salaried staff who don’t work on commission. The advice they provide only has the customer and property at heart.

Before any tanking material is applied, the walls must be made sound and stable. Any weak areas must be strengthened and all areas inspected closely for damage. Our team understands the details required to make sure the tanking treatment is completed to the highest standard.

Does My Basement Need Tanking?

If you want to use your basement as a living space, you will almost certainly need to waterproof it. Otherwise, the moisture from the earth will penetrate the walls over time.

In some circumstances, tanking is not recommended. New buildings that have not yet settled would not be suitable for cementitious tanking slurries. We would also not recommend cementitious tanking slurries if your basement is very close to a railway or tube line as the vibrations could be an issue. In these circumstances, another method of waterproofing would be suggested instead.

Our team of highly-skilled staff have the experience to ensure the job is done correctly and to current legal British Standards.

Why Damp Proof the Basement?

If you only use the cellar to store items that don’t need a dry atmosphere then there’s no need to tank the walls. If, however, you want to turn the basement into a living space, it’s essential to waterproof the area. Damp will make the rooms feel very cold and it will quickly damage any decoration you apply to the walls. You can get mould developing in everything from clothing to furniture which not only ruins items but is also a potential health hazard.
